What’s Trendy In Aesthetics?
We’re almost halfway through the year already and thankfully after the pandemic hiatus, aesthetic treatments are enjoying a revival! As an industry, non-surgical aesthetics has never been more buoyant, with more women and men embracing the opportunities to improve how they feel about themselves. We picked through the CCR trend report issued at the end of the last year and have highlighted some of the key themes that emerged. Let’s take a quick look at the trends it said would be making waves in 2022.
Injectables 2.0
In the UK, at the start of this year, Hyaluronic Acid treatments made up 34.5% of total non-surgical procedures, second only to botulinum toxin treatments making up 61.3%.* While Botox is still, obviously, big business, other injectables such as fillers are rising up the ranks thanks to product innovation, patient education and social acceptance.
One particular product that has sparked interest among nurse practitioners has been Revanesse®.
Sharon Bennett, aesthetic nurse practitioner and chair of the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses (BACN) told CCR (one of the biggest events for non-surgical and surgical treatments) “Safety and performance are key for me. The fact that Revanessee® has received FDA approval in the US gives me reassurance that it is a safe and reliable product. In the clinic, I have been delighted with the results, as have my patients. The uniqueness of the spherical particles makes for a smooth, comfortable injection with low inflammation. I’m loving SHAPE for defined cheekbones and ULTRA for the lips.”
Behind Botox and lip fillers, skin boosters are the most-booked treatment on Glowday. It’s no surprise to anybody that Profhilo has been a huge success in the UK and continues to grow in popularity! Practitioners are telling us that there is a growing demand for skin booster treatments to other areas of the body. The CCR reported that the Profhilo® Body Kit protocol will be big news and has been clinically proven to counteract skin laxity, improve surface hydration and skin elasticity, so it could be something to add to your portfolio of treatments. Its manufacturers report that in the abdomen, 4 months after starting the treatment, a 23% statistically significant improvement in skin roughness and laxity was found… we know plenty of new Mums who’d like a bit of that! But we’d always urge caution with any stats used in marketing and only your own experience and results (with any treatment!) will give you the confidence and credibility to offer it.
Supercharged Skincare!
GlowdayPRO recently added the ability for practitioners to add skincare consultations to their treatment menus given the meteoric rise and focus on skincare as the bedrock of all good aesthetics outcomes.
What was once a ‘quick mention’ at the end of an appointment after a ‘quick fix’ treatment, skincare is now integrated into aesthetics plans and more than simply a nice-to-have. Patients are becoming educated that injectables are, in fact, the icing on the cake and it’s good skincare that gives patients the optimum results.
The pandemic helped, women had more time, became more invested and learned more. Combined with the trend for ‘glowy and glassy’ skin being flaunted by influencers and celebrities as the elixir of health, there is more demand than ever from patients to incorporate skincare into their life. The emergence of medical-grade skincare products, backed by science, enables practitioners to offer patients a skincare plan with support and good results! The CCR report predicated this, stating “Powered by knowledge, not hype, this trend is here to stay with its science-backed, quality brands such as Obagi®, pHformula, Neostrata® Dr Nina Facial Sculpting, SkinBetter Science, PCA Skin® and Revision Skincare.”
The power players are wising up to this too, with collaborations forming between the likes of SkinCeuticals & Cutera to offer combined protocols that maximise both skincare and device-based treatments.
Michelle Goulbourne – Senior National Sales Manager, at SkinCeuticals says: “Clinics we work with are increasingly finding that optimal patient results come from pairing the best medical grade skincare with high-performance energy based treatments. At SkinCeuticals we have a product-based regime to compliment all manner of aesthetic treatments; from Laser to Radio Frequency and injectables, ensuring patients' skin is looked after and appears at its best before, during and after a clinical treatment program.”
Skincare is an appealing option to an aesthetic treatments novice and provides you with an opportunity to attract new patients. Once you’ve gained their trust with treating their skin, they will be more open to further treatments and become long-term, loyal patients.
Microneedling With Va Va Voom
There’s nothing new with microneedling and it’s a firm favourite among GlowdayPRO’s practitioners. However, the emergence of new technology and devices that further amplify the results of microneedling through incorporating radio frequency, has caught the attention of celebrities such as Judy Murray and received significant coverage in the beauty media. Morpheus8 has gained significant awareness this year and RFM is gradually appearing on the treatment menus of many clinics, with lots of new products and devices entering the market.
Devices such as Morpheus8 are an investment for practitioners and need significant consumer demand to recoup. We’re not convinced the benefits of RFM has (yet) made enough waves among ‘ordinary’ consumers to justify this outlay for smaller clinics and solo practitioners, who may find it more beneficial to focus their time and efforts on familiar treatments that they know work and they can rely on their target patients to purchase. Consumers will need to see some impressive results before parting with their cash. It is an emerging trend worth keeping your eye on though!
What else?
Other trends highlighted in the CCR trends report include body sculpting and fat loss solutions. While generally GlowdayPRO sees less of a demand for these treatments, the likes of Aqualyx are popping up more frequently on the treatment menus of practitioners. It could be just a matter of time, more proven results and increased marketing of these treatments before they climb the popularity ranks.
